Steps to Clearing Your Cargo
The busy season is drawing near and Kingston Wharves Limited is working with its partners to make it a hassle free experience. Our advice to business persons, family and friends who will be shipping before the end of the year is to ship early as the closer it gets to December, the more likely you may experience delays in receiving your cargo.
Being prepared is half the story, so refresh your memory or learn how to clear cargo at Kingston Wharves in 6 easy steps:
Step 1- Collect your documents
Collect your Bill of Lading/Order from the Shipping Agent, Custom Broker, or Freight Forwarder. Take this along your valid identification (i.e. National ID, Drivers Licence or Passport) and your TRN.
Step 2- Come to Kingport Building
Take your documents that is the Bill of Lading/Order to Kingport Building on Third Street in Newport West, to pay all relevant charges.
Step 3- Go to the Berths
The Berth is where the warehouse with your cargo is located. There are three of them, Berth 5, Berth 6 and Berth 7. The Berth where your cargo is located is printed/stamped on your documents.
What to do at the Berth?
Take documents to the Customs Manifest Branch at Berth 5, 6, or 7 to verify document(s).
What does Manifest Mean?
The documents you received from the Shipping Agent or Freight Forwarder is matched against the information submitted to Jamaica Customs. After being checked, the documents are validated with a “Customs Manifest Branch” Stamp.
Step 4- Locating your Cargo
Take the validated document(s) to the Security Officer at the warehouse for your cargo to be located.
Step 5 - Customs Inspection
The cargo is checked in the Inspection Area by a Customs Officer who will value how much Customs Duty is to be paid. All Customs Duty must be paid at the Customs Cashier located at the Berth. Having paid the Duty, collect your Customs Release from the Customs Officer who checked your cargo.
Step 6 - Delivery of your Cargo
Collect your Gate Pass from the Gate Pass Clerk located at the Berth. Use the Gate Pass to drive in your transport through the Main Entrance on Third Street. Collect your cargo at the Berth and go directly to the exit gate where your documents will be checked by Customs, Security and Kingston Wharves personnel.
